What Does the Torah Say? What do you say?

The Torah has a richness unsurpassed in beauty, grace, and wisdom. Within it, we find instruction and light for the ages. Let's see what we can glean from it for an all too common scenario.

Dan is a man in the middle. He is just past middle age, newly married and his father is aging quickly. The problem is that because of no fault of his own, his father has suffered many injustices in his life and now is at a point where he is isolated and unable to care completely for himself. He leans on Dan for social interaction, financial management, medical management, daily activities of living, and more.

Dan's wife is starting to have health issues as well, but not as severe. But most importantly, she has mentioned to Dan several times that things are falling through the cracks at home. She tries to be understanding about her father-in-law but is not happy about the arrangement because their relationship is suffering strain especially when Dan takes off from work too much to care for his dad. It affects everything. Dan has been reprimanded and even lost jobs because of not showing up as required.

Dan loves everyone in his life but is seriously caught in the middle. What does the Torah say about Dan and his situation? On one hand, he is to honor his mother and father. On the other, he is to be joined together as one with his wife.
